Camp Diogenes Staff Handbook Rule #129: No one may enter a body of water on camp premises without a lifeguard. This includes, but is not limited to, the Water Hole, the spring in the woods, any puddles deeper than five inches, and lagoons that appear in undiscovered sun-dappled glades. Above-ground pools are fine, as they’re more like baths.

Transcript
Amanda: Last time on Join the Party.
Eric: It's the morning before the first day of camp, and everyone is all hands on deck. Phoebe, Les, and Carrie-Ann, aka the Best Friends, aka the CITs, aka the player characters, are put in charge of finding the swim staff who was mysteriously not at breakfast, and Carrie-Ann is put in charge of Boo, Director Löw's precocious 8-year-old. At the waterhole, they find Kathy Vashion, the only swim staff member around. She's also worried that the swim staff are missing. But she wonders if they all got grabbed by local legend, the waterhole monster. After poking around the swim staff cabins, who all seemed ready for the first day of camp, the CITs head to the Tripper Shack. Head of tripping, Frankie, lays out all of her theories on whether or not the waterhole monster is real when it comes out to like, eh, I don't know and loans Les a personal oxygen tank if he wants to dive deep into the water. There's something lurking in the depths. Oh, it's a new episode. Let's get the party started.
[theme]
[chirping birds]
Eric: Last we left off you are heading away from the Tripper Shack where Frankie with her recreational diving gear has given you an oxygen tank, if you want to use it to swim around deeper into the waterhole. I actually have a custom move here, which is kind of like the Homebrew of Monster of the Week, of PBTA here. You can use the oxygen tank and apply Act Under Pressure to that in that in-
Brandon: [singing] Under pressure!
Amanda: [singing] Pushing down on me as I dive in water getting closer at the source of Earth's gravity
[Brandon laughs]
Eric: On a 10, you can just use it, it works perfectly, you can swim pretty deep with it for an extended period of time. 7-9, it doesn't work that well. You only have a limited amount of time that you can swim underwater and-- which means you can't go that deep and if you fail, the oxygen tank is actually broken and you can't use it.
Brandon: Sick.
Eric: When you figure that out, you have to jump in the water first so we'll figure out when you figure that out if you roll that.
Brandon: Cool.
Julia: Phoebe's just like-
Julia (as Phoebe): Les, are you absolutely sure that you want to do this because like I don't know I just have a bad feeling about the water and being around the water in general and I'm just like-- I don't know I'm not sure, my guy.
Brandon (as Les): I mean I hear you, I don't know, like what-- is there another option? I don't really know what else to do.
Julia (as Phoebe): Uhhh... not dying is always a really cool option in my mind, like cool kids don't die.
Brandon (as Les): We're all gonna die. You got to live here today, buddy.
Julia (as Phoebe): You know as a- as a 14 year old. I get that.
[Brandon laughs]
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): In order to be the longest serving director of Camp Diogenes, I'm going to have to live to at least 60. So, I just, well, I can't die today.
Eric: As you are heading away from the Tripper Shack, Frankie as a head of camp has a walkie-talkie to all the other heads of camp, and you hear over the walkie-talkie, Assistant Directors Z says-
Eric (as AD Z): [over the walkie-talkie] This is a Code Orange, Code Orange. Please keep non-essential staff away from the waterhole, it's a Code Orange.
Brandon (as Les): Shit.
Julia (as Phoebe): What does that mean?
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Shouldn't we know what that means? What does that mean?
Eric: Frankie says-
Eric (as Frankie): You should go, you should get over there.
Julia (as Phoebe): Are we essential?
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Whatever's happening in camp, I'm essential to it. So we got to go.
Julia (as Phoebe): I guess we're essential then. Okay.
Brandon (as Les): If you consider yourself essential, you are essential.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Yes, Les. Come on!
Brandon (as Les): Let's go!
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Best Friends!
Eric (as Boo): Hey, my feet are too short, carry me!
Brandon (as Les): Get on my back, buddy.
Eric (as Boo): Heck, yeah! Piyaaah!
[Julia laughs]
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): No jumping, remember?
Brandon: He whips me with a watermelon rind.
Amanda: Slobbery.
Eric: Hell yeah. So as you head over back towards the waterhole, you see Assistant Director Z pulling with his two very large arms underneath Jane's, as he's pulling him away from the waterhole. Matt Jane's leg looks like it's pointing in a bad direction, y'all.
Brandon (as Les): Oh, no!
Eric: It's bad.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): No!
Eric: There's also a massive kind of like, oblong divot in the side of the waterhole. That seems to be made from a very, very large flipper. And you are looking inside and you see two bright golden eyes leering at you from like 10 feet down and then there's like a big dark mass below it that seems to be covering up a very very deep in the water.
Julia: Eric, most importantly, is Tater Tot okay?
Eric: Tater Tot is nowhere near here.
Julia: Okay.
Eric: Phoebe, you look around and Tater Tot is 1000 feet in the other direction. Panting and waving at you with a paw.
Julia: That's where I want to be.
Brandon: Eric, I believe I saw a new creature.
Eric: Yes, you did.
Amanda: Oooh!
Brandon: Which means with my Cryptid Sighting move, I get to ask one of the Investigate a Mystery questions for freezies.
Amanda: Hell yeah.
Eric: For sure.
Brandon: Um, let's see. Where did it go? What can hurt it? What can hurt it, maybe?
Eric: Yeah, what can hurt it is good.
Brandon: What do you guys think?
Julia: Yeah, yeah.
Amanda: Yeah.
Eric: Okay. It's in the water. So-
Brandon: LIAR!
Eric: So anything- yeah, exactly. Maybe like putting electricity in there. But that is pretty dangerous. You're going to electrify the entire waterhole. I will say this thing is large but as you know from your studies of Nessie-related water creatures, they're not dexterous, because they only have flippers.
Brandon: From my study of whale penises.
Eric: Of whale penises, yes, they are not dexterous. So if you got on top of it, or you did something to distract it, and someone made a move on it, you would probably hit it in some vulnerable places that it cannot reach, you know? Like it's not like a giant sort of thing where it can use its human-style hand and reach on its back–
Brandon: Sure.
Eric: –and grab you.
Brandon: Okay, I relay that information to my best friends.
Eric: As Assistant Director Z says-
Eric (as AD Z): This is a Code Orange, everyone needs to stay back. We don't have a lifeguard on duty, no one can get in the water and Jane here is- is-- needs attention before- and the campers are gonna get-- gonna be here in an hour.
Julia (as Phoebe): Where's-- where's Kathy? Like she– she was here before and then she went to go get waffles and then she said she was coming back here.
Eric: Matt says gritting his teeth through the pain–
Eric (as Matt): Ugh! I didn't see Kathy. I wish I could be of more help right now. But I kind of looked like the letter K at the moment.
Julia (as Phoebe): Oh, no.
Amanda: I soothe my palm over his forehead.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Shhh. You're doing fine. You're doing great.
Eric (as Matt): Oh, thank you.
Brandon (as Les): You definitely need to go to the nurse. Can-- Z- Assistant Director Z, are you, are you taking him there?
Eric (as AD Z): I'm getting on my four-wheeler right now. But everyone else needs to stay away.
Brandon (as Les): Yeah, we will
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): We'll stay here and make sure the rest of them stay away.
Julia (as Phoebe): Yeah.
Eric: You have to manipulate someone.
Amanda: Okay.
Eric: That's + Charm.
Amanda: I got an 8.
Julia: Nice. Good.
Amanda: + 0.
Eric: That's good. Yeah, you have to do something to show them that you– that you mean it.
Eric (as AD Z): Carrie-Ann, are you ready for the responsibility for keeping everyone safe? Are you able to do this? Have you- is this- can you embody what is in the staff manual of making sure that everyone is safe to be able to grow and explore themselves in the best way possible?
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Are my initials C-A-M-P?!
Eric (as AD Z): No, it's CARP! We know, it's in your file.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): [whispers] No, my nightmare.
[Brandon laughing heartily]
Eric: I'm sorry.
[Amanda shouting devastatingly]
Brandon: And then Carrie-Ann wakes up from the dream.
Eric (as AD Z): But I'll change your file if you're able to take care of this.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Do you think that the director would allow me her one child, her one biological physical child-
Eric (as Boo): Hem-hem.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): -if she didn't trust me?
Eric (as AD Z): That's a very good point. All right. Keep everyone away from here.
Eric: Assistant Director Z throws Matthew Jane over his shoulder and hops onto a four-wheeler that's right there. It goes, brrrr! and pulls out.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): We are not talking about the CARP thing.
Julia (as Phoebe): Okay.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Please
Brandon (as Les): Hey, Carrie-Ann, whatever you want to call yourself.
Julia (as Phoebe): It doesn't change how we think of you.
Brandon (as Les): Not even a little bit.
Julia (as Phoebe): You are CAMP.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): This is why you guys are my best friends.
[giggles]
Eric: As the Best Friends relay that they're best friends you notice that the gold eyes are starting to surface and are getting closer and closer towards you. What do you do?
Julia: Phoebe is taking several steps back.
Brandon (as Les): So that thing is bad
Julia (as Phoebe): You still want to go in the water now, Les, after you saw what happened with Jane?
Amanda: I have mace and a flare gun and I think both could be useful in like making the monster you know-- hurting it or making it like give up anything it's holding.
Brandon: Yeah.
Amanda: But I kind of want to just like wait to see if it gets learned to the surface. If any of us have like pocket almonds or trail mix or we can toss Boo's watermelon thing to like, make the creature surface if it's not already.
Brandon: I think that creature might have a taste for people, so-
Amanda: It's true. Eric, did– did Jane bleed at all? Like was there any like blood on the– on the shore or on the bank?
Eric: If that's what you want. There's a blood stain from because he, as he said, his legs look like a K.
Amanda: Yeah, I was hoping to forget that image. But um-
[Brandon laughing]
Amanda: -and it's in my brain now. I would love to pull like a little folding travel out of my pocket. Get and scoop up the bloody sand and fling it into the center of the watering hole.
Eric: Oh, that's good. Okay, usually you can't do this because you're not supposed to manipulate monsters. But I think that this is another Manipulate Someone to kind of get it to do what you want.
Amanda: I will roll.
[dice roll]
Amanda: Alright, coming back. That's a 10.
Eric: That's a 10, baby.
Julia: Yeah!
Eric: So what are you trying to do?
Amanda: I'm trying to have the monster surface so that Les can get a better look at it. And we can see if it's holding a kid, looks well fed, looks hungry, just get some more information about it and potentially defeat it.
Brandon: Can I actually in coordination with Carrie-Ann here, I think is good idea.
Amanda: Yeah.
Brandon: So this is a quarry, right? So I assume there's sort of like a quarry wall like it's not just like flat grass and then water, right. Like, there's definitely like elevations of various rocks around?
Eric: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, for sure.
Brandon: Okay, cool. I would love to like, scramble up a rock real quick because I'm a climber and wait for Carrie-Ann to get the monster to surface.
Amanda: Oh yeah, we can coordinate. I wouldn't like, act-
Brandon: Yeah, no, no, no.
Eric: Oh, yeah.
Amanda: Yeah.
Eric: You can just do that a lot of this stuff you can kind of just do unless you're doing something that's like extraordinary. So you can definitely just do that.
Brandon: So yeah, I would love to do that. And then once the monster surfaces I want to use my No Limits, jump onto its back and hopefully hold a weak spot available for our friends to do something.
Eric: Absolutely. That sounds great.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Phoebe? Is there anything you can like do from afar. Because I do have a flare gun and I think if you like pointed at the monster and shot at it from like a while back, that might help.
Julia (as Phoebe): I- I can shoot a flare gun at a giant sea creature, sure whatever. That seems like it'll work
Brandon: Incredible.
Eric: Incredible.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): That'll be fun for you.
Julia (as Phoebe): It will be fun for me.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): And like Boo, the best view will definitely be from behind Phoebe. Like several feet behind her like make sure she's between you in the water.
Eric (as Boo): Okay, I can do that.
Eric: Hell yes. Okay, so here's what happened. So with the bloody dirt, the golden eyes surface, and you see a long neck with like a dinosaur-esque head. And as it opens its mouth and roars at all of you, there's both-- much like human-- there are incisors and molars in that mouth.
Julia (as Phoebe): It's an omni eater!
Eric: It omn-ieats!
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Quarry. She's beautiful.
Eric: The golden eyes look at all of you. But then immediately it sniffs and looks down and you can see it is going after the blood in the water. And as it dives down and kind of like snaps its jaws and dives at the bloody dirt.
Brandon: I want to jump on top of that motherfucker.
Eric: Do it.
Amanda: Damn, Les.
Brandon: So I'm gonna roll my No Limits move.
Eric: Nice.
Amanda: Absolute legend.
Brandon: So I rolled + Weird.
Amanda: And I'm scrambling backwards.
Brandon: Oh, no!
Julia: What did you roll?
Brandon: Oh, no!
Julia: Oh, Brandon.
Brandon: Oh, no.
Eric: What'd you do?
Brandon: I got a 3 + 2 for 5 and on a miss, something goes horribly wrong.
Julia: Hold on, hold on. We can fix this.
Amanda: Remember when Les died in the second episode?
Eric: Okay.
Amanda: The third episode.
Brandon: I gotta roll up a new character, alright.
Julia: What did you roll, a 5? Even if I give you a +1, that's not gonna help at all is it?
Brandon: No.
Amanda: I can give you a +2, but-
Eric: It would expose you.
Amanda: I mean, that's fine.
Eric: Okay, do it.
Amanda: Yeah.
Eric: Try.
Amanda: Yeah, as soon as I see that sort of like angle of approach is wrong or maybe like, the monster, Quarry, who I’ve named Quarry, has like shifted its neck after Les jumped, I'm going to just use the trowel that's still in my hand and I just dig it into my thigh. And like, cut myself a little bit and then fling the whole trowel into the water to try to distract the monster.
[everyone exclaims in amazement]
Eric: Alright, let's do it.
Amanda: Okay, so I rolled a 7.
Eric: Okay.
Amanda: And one of my moves is Helping Hand, which means that when I help out another hunter, they get +2 instead of +1.
Eric: Got it! Got it. Got it. Got it.
Brandon: Cool.
Amanda: So, Brandon, you get a +2, but now I am exposed to potential trouble or danger.
Brandon: Okay.
Amanda: So you now succeed.
Brandon: Oh, awesome. Okay, so that gives me a 7 then. So I do it but I choose one consequence, I suffer 1 harm. Take -1 forward, or I need to rest right now. So I'll probably just take 1 harm.
Eric: Cool.
Brandon: Yeah.
Julia: Les takes a quick nap on top of this sea monster.
Amanda: He has a long moment, takes like 5 minutes. There's an orchestral sort of like underpinning.
Eric: And then what, you expose yourself to danger as well?
Amanda: Yes, and so because I had a mixed success on helping Les, I'm exposed to trouble or danger.
Eric: Alright, so here's what happens as you dig the trowel into your thigh.
Amanda: Okay.
Eric: I think you always take 1 harm. Which is exposing yourself to danger. As it smells your blood, the waterhole monster whips around at you, which kind of looks like a ship, like doing a 90-degree turn, it fully, like does a full wheel around on you as it moves its entire body and its eye contact with you as it starts sniffing at you and getting closer and closer, kind of swimming towards the side of the waterhole where you are. As you do that, Les, you’ve flung yourself which changes the orientation, you would have been smacked by the long neck of the waterhole monster. But although you land hard on your ankle, which gives you the 1 harm, you are now on its back. Kind of like you're pretty, you are still submerged. You are in the water. You're like floating on top holding on to it like you were kind of like holding on to the side of a boat.
Brandon: I want to make sure that I'm trying to orient the eye towards Phoebe. So Phoebe can make the shot.
Julia: Yeah.
Eric: Absolutely.
Julia: And I think at that point, Phoebe probably does have to adjust where she's standing. And so she like kind of runs to the side and what I'd love to do, Eric is I would love to enchant a weapon using magic.
Brandon: Oooh, magic flare.
Julia: Which is a Weird roll for Use Magic.
Eric: Hell yeah.
Julia: So let me do that.
[dice roll]
Julia: That is 13.
Eric: 13?
Julia: 13.
Eric: Oh, that I mean-
Brandon: Shit.
Eric: -that's a very good, that's very good thing you did.
Julia: Right. So I, the magic works without issue and I choose my effect. So like I said, I'm going to enchant a weapon, which gives it +1 Harm and + Magic.
Eric: Oh, magic armor. Yeah, dude.
Julia: Yeah.
Eric: What does this look like to you?
Julia: I think for Phoebe-- obviously, we've talked about this before, Phoebe probably doesn't know that that's what's happening. Phoebe is just like, terrified. And also like this, this thing is gonna kill my friends. My best friends. I finally have friends now. And is going to just like shoot off the flare and as the flare kind of leaves the gun, it goes from like the typical red flare and instead turns like a kind of like, purple into icy blue.
Eric: Yeah, dude.
Julia: And then hopefully smacks this thing right in the face.
Eric: Okay, cool. So you're attacking. Please do Kick Some Ass, my man.
Julia: Is Kick Ass tough?
Eric: Yeah, that's tough.
Julia: So I rolled a 7.
Eric: Okay, 7 you and whatever you're fighting, inflict harm on each other. The amount of harm is based on the established dangers of the game. Okay, cool. You definitely get the shot off, and what is the damage on that?
Julia: +1 to whatever the weapon was originally.
Eric: So-
Amanda: Yeah.
Eric: What was a flare?
Amanda: So we haven't decided.
Eric: It can just be any of these. It can be any of these guns.
Amanda: Yeah, so does close or far mean-
Julia: Far because it's a gun would make the most sense.
Eric: Definitely far.
Amanda: So probably like a sniper then. So 3 harm far?
Eric: Actually, because it's a flare gun and a flare can also help. We're gonna, let's drop harm to 2.
Amanda: Yeah.
Eric: So a flare gun is 2, far. And then like-
Julia: Obvious.
Eric: Obvious.
Amanda: Yeah.
Eric: Yes.
Julia: Great. So it's now going to be 3 harm, and it's magic damage.
Eric: Oh, shit. Okay. Yeah, dude, you let the flair flies through the air and hits it right in one of its golden eyes. I will tell you, this has armor. But you get past the armor because it is magical. So this takes 3 damage.
Amanda: Hell yeah.
Brandon: So what does the armor mean? And what does it mean? Like an obvious weapon, what does all that mean?
Eric: Okay, so the tags are adjectives that you attach to weapons to demonstrate what they are, you know, like in Dungeons and Dragons, it would be 2 D6, and then maybe you does something else, right? Harm is the amount of harm that it takes, I have like an HP amount of harm that all the creatures have.
Brandon: Okay.
Eric: Armor means you get to subtract one from your armor, from your HP.
Amanda: Oh.
Eric: Which is like Carrie-Ann has that because Carrie-Ann is wearing a very heavy vest at all times.
Amanda: So many pockets.
Eric: Because this was a magical attack, I'm gonna say it ignores the armor. The other things here is that far is that it's not close weapon. It's a long-range weapon. And obvious is kind of an adjective, you can kind of makeup tags. But obvious means that everyone can see what's happening. So you can use that to your advantage. But if you were trying to be sneaky about it and you fired a flare gun, everyone would see where the bullet came from, right? So tags are adjectives you attach to your weapons.
Amanda: And this is a little bit of a homebrew for me, because my choices were all actual guns, which I didn't want to use, and a teenager shouldn't have. So some of them would be like you have to reload them. That's one tag. Some of them are loud. Some of them are messy. But the obvious is the tag we’re using for the flare gun.
Eric: I would say that a flare has only two shots in it.
Julia: Yeah.
Eric: Which, so you would have to reload that eventually. But like you know, we don't care about reloading guns and stuff.
Brandon: Yeah.
Eric: So this is going to take 3 harm and it's also magic damage. So that's how like that goes off kick some ass. So with the kicking ass, Phoebe, you have fire the flare gun, flare gun goes right into one of its golden eyes as it does an unearthly bellow. It then just reaches up one of its flippers and slams down in response.
Julia: I'm still pretty far away, does this thing have like a decent reach?
Eric: It does have a decent reach.
Julia: Okay.
Eric: So the attack here is what I have written down is, the attack is smash it's for harm and small area. Because it's a very large flipper that you see comes all the way out of the water and comes slamming down on you. Phoebe, take 3 harm and I'm dividing that between you and Boo who is standing behind you as Boo also takes 1 harm.
Julia: No! Can I shove Boo out of the way?
Eric: You can roll Protect, yes.
Julia: That's Tough, right?
Eric: Is- roll Tough. Yes.
[dice roll]
Julia: No, I don't get that.
Eric: What do you get on your roll?
Julia: A 4.
Eric: Okay, so take experience for failing. On a miss you end up making things worse.
Julia: Oh, great. So I gave them 2 fucking harm instead of just 1 harm?
Eric: Cool. Alright, from there, Phoebe, I want you to roll. Just roll 2 D6 for me.
Julia: 9.
Eric: Okay, 9. So here's what happens the flipper comes down on the both of you, Phoebe you take 3 harm. It's like someone dropped a goddamn car on you, you are hurt and you maybe you should have drowned instead, that would have would have felt a little bit better.
Julia: Probably.
Eric: You try to get your body in front of Boo. But it is-- this thing is so big that it takes down this little eight-year-old as well and he falls over which gives you the perfect opportunity for the flipper to kind of like, maneuver itself forward, press down on Boo's body and drag him towards the water.
Julia (as Phoebe): Oh, no!
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): No, no, no, no!
Eric: He's screaming like-
Eric (as Boo): No! You're not gonna do that! I can swim. It doesn't even matter. It's fine!
[midroll]

[midroll music]
Julia: I'd like to throw a jinx out, then.
Eric: Do it. What it, what is, Julia, explain that.
Julia: A jinx will allow me to interfere with what a monster, minion, or bystander is trying to do.
Eric: I also want to say and I want to pause here for a second. Remember Julia, everyone still has Luck, where you can turn negatives into critical successes.
Julia: Right.
Eric: But remember, it is a limited amount. So if you want to change that and use your luck to protect Boo, you can. You don't have to- you don't have to indulge this. This is me popping in to remind you, you have something useful.
Julia: Right, I'm just particularly nervous because my dark side gets stronger, the more luck I use.
Eric: Sure.
Amanda: I think we have some options because I can try to protect him if this doesn't go well.
Eric: That's fine.
Julia: I rolled a 13.
Eric: Goddamn. So what does the jinx do?
Julia: I get to hold 2 when I Jinx a target. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to interfere with what a monster is trying to do, in this case, drag Boo into the water.
Eric: Yeah.
Julia: And I'm also going to help a Hunter by giving them plus one forward with interfering with the enemy.
Eric: Great. Okay, so as you look and you dive after Boo, you see that like some ice blue, almost like shockwaves radiate over the flipper and it's kind of like paralyzed in place. As you, as Boo is trying to wriggle out from underneath. Les, what are you doing right now?
Brandon: So Les is going to take his walking stick which is attached to his backpack and shove it into this creature's eyeball. So I'm going to kick some monster ass.
Eric: Do it.
Brandon: So I roll + Tough.
Eric: And you get +1 from the jinx.
Julia: Yes.
Brandon: Oh, nice. So I got a 7 + 1 from the jinx. So 8 total?
Eric: 8 total. Okay
Julia: Heck yeah.
Eric: I will also say that's an advantageous spot. So I'm going to ignore armor as well.
Julia: Yeah.
Eric: You have all done 4 damage so far, which is great. In exchange, I did say that you were in a- you were in an advantageous spot. So getting hit back-- so it instead of trying to slap on its back, which is unable to do, it's going to drown you as well. Roll + Tough and I'm going to give you an extra +1 to that because you're on its back.
Brandon: Can I pull out my auction and shove it in my mouth real fast?
Eric: Yeah, for sure.
Brandon: Cool.
Eric: Yeah, we're going to do this in sequence because you might not need it.
Brandon: Ah, okay.
Eric: This is like the moment when you're getting bucked off but if you're in the water, you can then use that move.
Brandon: I don't think I'll need it because I just got an 11.
[cheering]
Eric: Hell yes, dude. Right, it tries to roll on its back and like get you off of it but you're holding tight, you're fine.
Julia: Like a crocodile doing a death roll.
Eric: Yes.
Brandon: If you think Les hasn't gone to Florida and wrestled some alligators, you are wrong.
Julia: Of course, he has.
Amanda: That was your 13th birthday party.
Eric: Hey, here's another thing for you because you rolled so well, Les, I'm going to tell you something. That is not how Nessie-type monsters defend themselves. They don't drown folks. They try to bite you. That's why they have the incisors in the mouth, right? Even if you are on its back, it would it's like a turtle in-- the plesiosaur as a long a long ancestor of the humble turtle, you're on its back, you're in golden place. What are you? Why is it trying to flip you like it's an alligator?
Brandon: So can I reach up and try to take this mask off of the Scooby Doo villain and discover that it's been a Dr. Mansion the whole time?
Julia: It's a robot the whole time.
Eric: Carrie-Ann, what are you doing?
Amanda: Is Boo out of danger now that the creature is focused on Les?
Eric: Boo looks hurt. Boo has a cut on his head. But he's kind of like wriggling away from the flipper and the monster seems more concentrated on Les on its back. So Boo is currently not in danger but definitely, he's still in the danger zone.
Amanda: I have -1 to tough, so I don't want to protect someone.
Eric: You can always read a bad situation if you want to.
Amanda: Okay.
Eric: So do + sharp.
Amanda: Okay, I got a 6 + 1 for a 7. So I need to ask you a question.
Eric: If your question is what's the best way to predict the victims, that can help you.
Amanda: I'm kind of torn between that or are there any dangers we haven't noticed?
Eric: It's up to you.
Brandon: Or what's the biggest threat and then we discovered it's been Boo the whole time.
Amanda: Um, are there any dangers we haven't noticed?
Eric: Sure thing. Dangers you haven't noticed.
Amanda: If the answer’s no, I’ll be pissed.
Eric: You're starting to put it together. This thing is drowning folks. People disappeared or the people who disappeared under the water? Maybe that's something you're that you're starting to worry about or think about.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Les, I think you might have to go down there.
Brandon (as Les): You think, you think they're down there?
[monster bellows]
Julia: Is that the monster?
Brandon: Was that the monster?
Julia: Or was that Boo?
Eric: That was the monster. What do you do?
Amanda: [whispers] I don't know.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Les, I physically can't swim without a lifeguard here, but I know you can.
[everyone laughs]
Amanda: And then I'm going to, like squeeze my thigh muscle, and like smush a handkerchief into my cut, and then throw it at the monster to try to attract its attention more.
Eric: Okay.
Amanda: I'll try to keep it busy as Les goes down.
Eric: Yeah, roll another Manipulate Someone.
Julia (as Phoebe): You're losing so much blood, Carrie-Ann.
Eric: That's + Charm. I'm also going to tell you to take another harm.
Amanda: Okay. 8, ummmm, Eric, I am upholding my sacred oath, which is never to break a rule and to model compliance at all times at camp. And can I take +1 on rolls that directly help achieve that goal?
Eric: That's true. You only get a 9 though. So that's, that's fine.
Amanda: Oh, okay. Right.
Eric: But your penalty is again, you hurt yourself again. So you take another harm. And again, this you, this hurts why you're doing this yourself? But you had the-
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): FOR CAMP!
Eric: - this continues to be a distraction for the waterhole monster.
Brandon: Yeah, fuck yeah, I'm going to grab the oxygen tank out of my backpack and do a backflip into the water.
Eric: Hell yes. Alight, roll + Cool for the swimming below the water oxygen tank move.
Amanda: I thought you're gonna just say because that was awesome.
Brandon: So I do have my Just Another Day move. Which means, when I act under pressure, I get to roll + Weird-
Eric: Sure. Yeah, that's fine.
Brandon: -instead of cool.
Julia: Nice.
Eric: That's fine.
Brandon: 8 + 2 for 10, baby!
Eric: Let's go.
Julia: Yeah!
Eric: You set out what you go to what you want to do. This oxygen tank is working fine. Turns out that the fact that Frankie double wrapped it in duct tape is enough of a water seal to keep all that stuff in. So you're holding this, the oxygen tank to your mouth as you're swimming with one arm. And as you get farther and farther into the water, you can see that there are like-- because it's a kind of quarry style, there's like shelving of different types of rock inside, in the actual water. And you see that there are like five bodies kind of just like bobbing around stuck into one of the shelves. In that particular shelf, that's also, you see that there is like an underwater cavern. It's very small. It's more of like a little tunnel. But you see that it's heading away from the quarry up towards the woods. It seems like and I'll just tell you this, that this is like the stream, the brook from the woods comes in both from the top and from the bottom. Or like the middle of the quarry. That's where the water comes from. But you see that there's like five bodies of the swim staff floating in here. Kay, Kathy, Marco, and the other two swim folks that I don't feel like naming because they're just like they're drawn in the background.
Julia: They're just dead now.
Eric: They're not dead.
Julia: Okay.
Eric: I also want to say they're not dead. They seem to be floating but there are little air bubbles coming from all of their noses.
Amanda: Can they breathe underwater indefinitely?
Brandon: Can I read a bad situation?
Eric: Yeah, read a bad situation.
Julia: Amanda that's what happens when you get a lifeguard certification is you can-
Amanda: Damn
Julia: -breathe underwater indefinitely.
Amanda: I should've listened to my mom and done that.
Brandon: I rolled a 10 again.
Eric: Alright, hold 3. Ask me three questions, my man.
Brandon: Damn okay. I was gonna ask what's the best way to protect the victim?
Eric: The best way to protect the victims were-- would be to take them all up, but it would be pretty difficult to do. So. There's also whatever put it down there. This is pretty fine, I don't know if the thing that put it down there was just this monster.
Brandon: Okay, then I'm gonna ask-
Amanda: Steven?!
Brandon: Are there any dangers we haven't noticed and what's the best way out?
Eric: Yeah, the best way out is if the waterhole monster is still distracted, you can probably just go up. You can't go swim up the stream, you still just got to go up. And you can probably like grab a few of them if you went back and forth like two, three times. What was the third question? I'm sorry.
Brandon: Are there any dangers we haven't noticed?
Eric: Yeah, I think that like the waterhole monster isn't working alone. There's something else going on here and maybe it's not a danger necessarily but like you remember the water comes down from this creek that's up in the woods. And maybe that's something that you got to look into.
Brandon: Okay, well, can I go ahead and start-- I want to do No Limits to see if I can just grab like a ton of them on my way up and just take-
Eric: Hell yes.
Brandon: -as many as I can up there.
Eric: Do it.
Brandon: So roll + Weird. 7 + 2 for 9, so I do it but I choose one consequence and I'll take- I'll just take another harm.
Eric: Okay, take it other harm from swimming hard. What harm are you at?
Brandon: 2.
Eric: Okay, wonderful. So yeah, you can keep doing that and as long as the waterhole monster is distracted, you can just keep doing that.
Brandon: Sick.
Julia: I guess time to distract the water monster.
Eric: Carrie-Ann, you're still bleeding. What are you doing, Pheebs? Do you want to take a shot with the gun?
Julia: I was looking at that. There's also I'm trying to just look at what my magic options are for Use Magic.
Eric: Sure.
Julia: And one of them is “trap a specific person, minion, or monster.”
Eric: Cool. Sure.
Julia: So I think I want to like trap it so it can't go after Les after watching Les go in the water and being like-
Julia (as Phoebe): Don't drown, don't drown, don't drown, don't drown, don't drown.
Eric: Yeah, do it.
[dice roll]
Julia: It's a 12.
Eric: Nice. What- how long can you trap it for now?
Julia: By default, the magic has one of the effects listed below-- lasts for about 30 minutes and does not expose you to danger, unwanted attention, or side effects.
Brandon: Damn!
Eric: Hell fucking yes. Alright, what does this look like to you?
Julia: I think that like, Phoebe is kind of like very confused by the weird electricity that's happening near Boo. And so she grabs Boo and kind of drags him further away. And she's like, it's kind of just like-
Julia (as Phoebe): Can you just stop?!
Julia: And then like, the electricity radiates across the rest of the monster.
Eric: Yeah, I think it's like literally paralyzed in place. I don't know, there's something about like when you're looking at an animatronic like a Chuck E Cheese creature that like its mechanics don't work. So it's just stuck in its motion, just swimming, shooting back and forth and swimming back and forth. And you know, that's actually pretty interesting because I think that the electricity radiates through and you see like a panel just like pop out of the waterhole monster.
Julia (as Phoebe): It's a robot, I knew it!
Eric: And like, you see that in the panel the there's a battery, it’s like weirdly paned glass in there, and has like a thrumming yellow energy that seems to be shorting in and out. It's like an urn made out of paned glass that seems to be shoved in the mechanics.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Did Z get this at the auction too?
Brandon: Pennies on the dollar!
Julia: Pennies on the dollar
Amanda: Burble burble burble.
Eric: So, Phoebe, you look up and you see that there is a-- there's like a rustling in the woods in the back behind and you see that there is like a very large creature, 10 feet tall. Like, you only see like, the shadow of it lingering in the back of the woods but you do see that there is a pale light blue light radiating from that, in the woods. And then it takes a step back and the light is gone.
[Phoebe groans]
Eric (as Boo): What do you do? What are you looking at? Shoot it!
Julia (as Phoebe): Okay!
Eric: I will also give you +1 forward here on your shot.
Julia: [dice roll] Great. 8 so I guess +1 then that's a 9.
Amanda: Can I help you?
Eric: Yeah.
Amanda: Because it's my weapon. I can just yell like “brace with your shoulder, you're doing great.”
Eric: Yeah, that will help.
Amanda: [mumbling] Cool. Okay, I got a 7. So Julia, you get +2. And unfortunately, once again expose myself to trouble or danger.
Julia: Okay, so that actually puts me above a 10 which means I get an extra effect.
Eric: Can I make a recommendation?
Julia: Okay.
Eric: Why don't you juice it?
Julia: Okay, yeah, I can inflict terrible harm.
Eric: I would do that.
Julia: Great. That means it's gonna do 4 magic damage, ignoring armor.
Eric: Hell, yes. That ignores the armor and the waterhole monster animatronic has 8. So you see-- you shoot this battery, it explodes. The yellow light kind of like dissipates into the sky and the golden eyes of the waterhole monster short out and it slumps its head over.
Amanda: Eyy!
Brandon: At the same time. I'm like, bobbing up with these bodies?
Eric: Yes, you've been, you're just going back and forth bringing them up.
Amanda: Yeah, I'll run around to where Les is and start pulling people up onto shore.
Julia: Yeah.
Eric: Kay, Kathy, and Marco are all like draped over Les' face.
Julia: Oh, Marco's there too. Okay, cool.
Eric: Yes.
Julia: I was suspicious of Marco.
Amanda: Yeah.
Julia: I was like, if someone's controlling this Marco is the one that went missing first.
Eric: Yep. Carrie-Ann. As you're watching Phoebe take the shot and you're yelling things out to help her square stance, you step out a loose rock that's over on the side of the quarry and you fall right into the water and you are drenched.
Julia: No.
Amanda: Do I take harm?
Brandon: No, you're just wet.
Amanda: Alright.
Julia: Okay.
Brandon: Les, looks over-
Brandon (as Les): It's like it's nice, right? It's a good-
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): I mean, if the monster wasn't here, beautiful, yeah.
Julia: Phoebe just yells-
Julia (as Phoebe): Not today!
Amanda: I'll swim over to the bodies, like trailing a little bit of blood in the water and start trying to pull him up
Eric: Yeah, you pull all the swim staff out of the water. They are unconscious but breathing and you now hear cheers coming from all the way at the front of camp echoing across the field.
Eric (as Campers): I would die! For Camp Die!
Brandon: Oh, no!
Eric (as Campers): I would die! For Camp Die!
Julia (as Phoebe): Oh, no. The children.
Eric: And the buses are pulling up.
Julia (as Phoebe): Oh no.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Oh god.
Julia (as Phoebe): How are we going to explain a giant monster who's also an animatronic to a bunch of children?
Amanda: Is it floating?
Eric: That's a good question.
Julia: Or has it sunk to the bottom of the hole?
Eric: I think, it truly think it's sunk, right? Because if he can-
Amanda: Probably.
Eric: -it's probably propping itself up
Amanda: If it's not, if it's not like treading water.
Eric: Yeah, I think it just starts sinking and sinking and sinking to the bottom of the waterhole. And eventually, after like, a few seconds, you can't see it anymore.
Brandon (as Les): Solves that problem.
Eric: You don't see it hit the ground, but it's gone.
Julia (as Phoebe): Okay, now we don't have to explain it to the children.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Maybe it'll like grow some cool oysters or something we can- we can--
Amanda: What's a chef's name?
Eric: Springer.
Amanda: Sticky? Okay, Springer.
Julia: Sticky!
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): We can give it a Springer, you know?
Brandon (as Les): We should get these guys to the nurse immediately.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Oh, yeah.
Brandon (as Les): Let's go.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): For sure.
Julia (as Phoebe): And also like all of us too should also go to the nurse immediately.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Yeah. We all need the nurse
Eric (as Boo): Do I look cool? With my bloody face?
Julia (as Phoebe): Ooooh.
Julia: Phoebe just looks at Carrie-Ann just like-
Julia (as Phoebe): That's, that's not good.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): No, it's not. I'll uhh, I'll take my backup handkerchief. Let's put this on the cut, okay, bud?
Eric: Phoebe you have thought, can I- can I put something in your brain?
Julia: Great. Hit me with it.
Eric: You say–
Eric (as Phobe): Hey, wait a second. I did so well today.
Julia (as Phoebe): I did so well today.
Eric (as Phoebe): I saved so many people. My magic was so great. It was so cool.
Julia (as Phoebe): I still don't know that I have magic. But like-
Eric (as Phoebe): Can I? Can I heal people too? Can I do that? Is that one of my powers?
Julia: I just press a hand very slowly Boo's face.
Eric: If you want to, you will have to roll for it-
Julia: Yeah.
Eric: -by putting it in your brain.
Julia: I was looking at that. I can heal 1 harm from an injury, cure a disease, or neutralize a poison.
Amanda: There you are.
Eric: Yeah. You want to try it?
Julia: Yeah, I wanna.
Eric: Okay.
Julia: 7 + 2 for 9.
Eric: Okay, what happens on that?
Julia: It works imperfectly. I have to choose a glitch, which means the effect is weakened, the effect is of a short duration, you take 1 harm, ignore armor, the magic draws immediate unwelcome attention, or it has a problematic side effect. I'm also going to let you pick that for me, Eric, because you didn't get a chance to punish me.
Eric: Right, well, you did stay out of the water, which was smart.
Julia: I did.
Eric: I'm glad you did. You put your hand on Boo's head and Boo goes-
Eric (as Boo): What are you? Ow. Ahh.
Eric: And soft blue, light blue light comes out of your hand. And you pull it back and Boo's cut is gone. Boo has no harm, right? And then like you wait a second. You're like, Ah! Pretty cool.
Julia (as Phoebe): Ah!
Eric: Pretty nice.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Damn, Phoebe.
Eric: And then like, immediately that bump is replaced by what can only be described as like, soft like, delicate moist moss.
Julia (as Phoebe): No.
Eric: That is just covering over-
Julia (as Phoebe): Oh, no, no, no.
Eric: -the spot where his cut was. It is so light, it is not like a big patch of it that you would see on a wet rock. But it does look like his face is kind of dirty. And like you see there's like little green sprouts and dirt in there.
Julia: Phoebe like reaches over and like tries to peel it off. Like-
Julia (as Phoebe): Like a scab, maybe that'll work?
Eric (a Boo): Ow. Ow. I thought you were-- Ow. Ow.
Julia (as Phoebe): Okay, I'm so sorry. Oh, no, no, no, no, no.
[Carrie-Ann groans]
Eric (as Boo): I didn't go in the water, can I still pass my swim test?
Julia (as Phoebe): Later.
Eric (as Carrie-Ann): Yeah.
Julia (as Phoebe): So much later.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Yeah. Yeah.
Eric (as Boo): Okay.
Julia (as Phoebe): If your mom asks, there wasn't a lifeguard and that's why we didn't let you take the swim test.
Eric (as Boo): I mean, there wasn't.
Julia (as Phoebe): Yeah.
Eric (as Boo): They were under the wa- they were-- they were all swimming and didn't want me to be a part of it.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): That's right.
Julia (as Phoebe): Yes, and that's the story that we're sticking to.
Eric (as Boo): Les, you're so good at swimming. Are you a lifeguard?
Brandon (as Les): No. I am scuba certified though.
Eric (as Boo): That’s not the same.
Brandon (as Les): I want to go take these people back to the nurse quickly, they're unconscious and dying.
Eric: Hell yes, Go.
Julia (as Phoebe): Yeah, let's do that.
Eric: Yeah, that's fine. Brandon, there's always time for jokes.
Julia: No one's gonna die just because we were making jokes, Brandon.
Eric: Yeah. After a while of sitting out there they like start coughing up water and they just all look dazed and they're all wearing camp appropriate swimwear. And they all just seem dazed so you're actually you're able to like kind of guide them towards the nurse as the buses pull up on the main field and kids start pouring out screaming
Eric (as Campers): I would die, for Camp Die! First day of camp! First day of camp! First day of camp!
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Does anyone else kind of rethinking that song?
Julia (as Phoebe): Yeahhhh...
Brandon (as Les): Kind of puts it in a new context when you have a giant monster?
Julia (as Phoebe): It really does.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Yeah, it does. I'm gonna go bring Boo back to his mom.
Julia (as Phoebe): Yeah, he's got to become a bird now, it's three o'clock.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): It's true.
Eric (as Boo): I'm a bird! Ca caw! I'm a cardinal!
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Want to go find the Cardinals, bud?
Eric (as Boo): I do! Cabin 1. Best cabin ever. I tell my mom to put me in cabin one. So I know what cabin I'm in.
Julia: I think Phoebe turns to Les as Carrie-Ann and Boo leave and is like-
Julia (as Phoebe): Um. So like, what? What was down there?
Brandon (as Les): I mean, it was the bodies, and I saw a second entry for the ri- for the like the stream water, like spring water. It comes in two spots. It looks like so... Yeah, I don't know. I mean, it looks like it went out to the forest. So we can go check that out at some point if you want to.
Julia (as Phoebe): I mean, we probably should now that there's a bunch of children that are our responsibility. Yay...
Brandon (as Les): Yeah. I mean, whatever the fuck built this machine monster, we're gonna have to deal with.
Julia (as Phoebe): Yeah.
Amanda: As Boo runs off to be with his cabin, I find the Director toward the front of camp where the buses are unloading. And I'm like-
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Hey, I know. It's like the worst time ever, but I do just have to tell you something.
Eric: The Director whips around at you and he's holding like six different clipboards. And the Director says-
Eric (as Director Löw): Carrie-Ann, you're wet. You went in the water? There's no lifeguard there.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): I fell in while protecting your son, who now has some moss on his forehead that we can't seem to get off. So it was a cut. But now it's just moss so I don't know if you want like the nurse to look at that? But I just- listen, I know. I'm know I'm going to get in trouble. But I just like, I need you to know. I need you to know.
Eric (as Director Löw): You went in the water and Boo got hurt?
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): I was protecting him.
Eric (as Director Löw): Carrie-Ann, I-- can I even trust you?
[gasp]
Eric (as Director Löw): It is the first day of camp and we're already having problems.
Julia (as Phoebe): Oh, no.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): You're right. I failed in my mission. I'm really sorry. I just, I needed you to know to make sure Boo's okay.
Eric (as Director Löw): Carrie-Ann, what is the motto of camp? Do what you say, say what you do.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Say what you do.
Eric (as Director Löw): You said you wouldn't go in the water without a lifeguard. You said you would protect Boo. You didn't neither. I am very disappointed in you, Carrie-Ann.
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): [in a small voice] I'm really sorry.
Eric (as Director Löw): I- just get on. Get on luggage duty, start taking out the bags- start taking out bags from these buses.
[sighs]
Amanda (as Carrie-Ann): Yes, mom-- ma'am.
Julia: Aw, girl.
Eric: So at the end of every Monster of the Week game, you are supposed to do an end-of-session experience which has to do with the amount of experience you'll get at the end here.
Brandon: Okay.
Eric: So I have a list of questions, if you say yes to one or two of them, you get 1 experience. If you say yes to 3 or 4 of them, you get 2 experience.
Brandon: Sick.
Julia: Okay.
Eric: Alright. Did you conclude the current mystery? I would say no. You did figure out what happened here. But there is still a deeper thing. I would say no here.
Amanda: We don't know who made the robit and we don't know like whose involvement got those campers captured?
Julia: Right, we did find the campers.
Eric: You did find the campers, which is good. Did you save someone from certain death or worse?
Brandon: Yes.
Julia: Yeah.
Amanda: Hell yeah.
Eric: Extremely yeah.
Amanda: Oh, yeah.
Eric: Right? Did you learn something new and important about the world?
Everyone: Yeah.
Brandon: Robits.
Julia: Oh, yeah.
Eric: Brandon, they're called robots.
Brandon: Amanda just said robits.
Eric: Brandon, I would really appreciate if you would respect robots. They don't go beep boop and they have interior organs.
Julia: Come one, Brandon, don't tattle.
Eric: Wow, Brandon. And then, did we learn something new and important about one of the hunters.
Amanda: I would argue you guys did learn that my initials are CARP and you didn't know that before.
Julia: Yeah.
Brandon: That's true.
Eric: I would also add that with the things about Phoebe. So I will-
Julia: Yeah, we learned some cool magic stuff about Phoebe.
Eric: I would say yes to Phoebe. So you got 3. So all of you get 2 marks of experience.
Amanda: Hey!
Julia: Hey, I leveled up this session.
Amanda: That fills up my meter.
Eric: Nice. Brandon, how many marks of experience you have?
Brandon: I have 3 out of 5 because if Les doesn't fail, apparently.
Eric: That’s true, you roll well, alright, cool.
Amanda: I'm sorry, my flaw is that I'm too efficient. That's fine.
Eric: So both of you are gonna get extra moves, which we're gonna go over in the next session but I have a little thing that I would love to, I would love to talk to you about.
Julia: Let's do it.
[mysterious background music]
Eric: We follow as the three of you run over to welcome all of the campers into another summer here at Camp Diogenes. The camera follows up the creek, follows up the spring, we kind of go deeper and deeper into the forest. And as we're following the creek and then we end up at a little, a little pool, kind of the head of the creek here. It is cool and crisp. And you can see little fish swimming around at this ethereal pool. And sitting in the pool is a like 3 foot tall little guy. He has big fairy wings, sunglasses, and bright orange Billabong boardshorts. And he says-
Eric (as Mystery Guy): Ugh. Another summer at Camp Diogenes, why? I just want those little buggers to go away.
Eric: And you hear over to the right as we turn and we see the wall outside of camp and seated in his camping chair, drinking two watermelons at once double fisting watermelons, slurp, thrown away, slurp, thrown away with the other hand is Steven. And Steven says-
Eric (as Steven): I know right? I think we can do something about that. Hi, I'm Big Steven.
[theme]
